David Altfeld, Artist and Painter Painting for me is often an on-going dialectical struggle as I play and experiment with structure and function, form and energy, line and color, where a pushing and pulling for eminence and clarity among these various, barely separable attributes takes place.

Amidst this tension , I experience frequent shifts between discovery and stability, disarray and order, excitement and despair. Will these many attributes join in some kind of balance, meaning, and harmonious expression? Will I subdue, conquer, and bring to life this painting or will it subdue and conquer me.

When the good does happen, if the sought for synthesis occurs, it happens for me through color, the transforming element. In color, where the paint lives, the love, beauty, and exactitude for which one strives, is often enough, quite magically, released.
